Inside the Experience
Located at 102 Hall Ave in scenic Coos Bay, Oregon, The Boat Fish & Chips offers a fresh, casual dining experience that captures the essence of coastal comfort food. From the moment you step inside or settle on their covered deck overlooking the bustling northbound Highway 101, you're greeted by friendly staff and a lively ambiance inspired by the local maritime culture. This spot isn't just about fish and chips; it's about a thoughtfully crafted menu designed to please a variety of tastes and dietary preferences.
The hallmark here is undoubtedly the fresh, deep-fried fish — whether it's pacific cod, halibut, or prawns — all prepared to crispy perfection without an ounce of greasiness. The generous portions, like five medium-sized fish served atop a hearty bowl of fries, showcase their commitment to quality and value. The clam chowder is rich and comforting, and the clam strips, along with fried steak bites, add satisfying variety to the menu. Not to overlook the sides, the crisp, well-balanced coleslaw and inventive extras like jalapeño poppers complement the main dishes beautifully.
What truly elevates The Boat Fish & Chips is the attention to customer experience. Servers bring warmth and energy to every table, making thoughtful recommendations tailored to individual preferences, including dietary needs. A playful touch like gummy worms served with the check adds a unique charm that lingers beyond the last bite. The indoor seating offers cozy nooks, while the covered outdoor deck invites you to enjoy the coastal breeze alongside your meal — pet-friendly, too, for those who want to bring their furry companions along.
As a reviewer deeply appreciative of fresh seafood and genuine hospitality, I find The Boat Fish & Chips to be a standout destination in Oregon’s coastal dining scene. Whether you’re craving classic fish and chips, a fish sandwich, or something a little different, this local gem promises freshness, flavorful seasoning, and a friendly atmosphere that makes each visit memorable.
“ Great staff and quick service!! My halibut tacos were dry as a bone and unseasoned... no salt whatsoever. My hubby enjoyed his smaller sized fish and chips. They have several smaller size options to go along with their main menu, which gave us great options for choice. This place features two smaller indoor areas to eat, plus a covered deck area outside. The northbound 101 goes right by the deck area, so we opted to eat inside the railway car area, just has 5 or 6 tables inside, plus you can play the Lottery. Staff was engaging, responsive, and knowledgeable about the food choices, and what you may need to go with that choice (sauces, sweeteners, etc.) I appreciated the way staff support and help one another, gives the place a nice vibe. Prices seemed fair for the menu. We were just traveling through so I just salted and ate the tacos. ”
“ Just got home after having a delicious meal at The Boat. My husband ordered their fish sandwich and I had the cod and fries. The fish was incredibly fresh for both our meals. Although the fish was deep fried, it was not greasy at all. The staff there is friendly and service was great. Luckily, we're locals so we can enjoy another meal there soon. ”
“ The atmosphere is casual and boat themed with a museum next door. There is indoor and outdoor seating. The waitress was very nice and quick. The clam chowder was great and the fried steak bites were tasty. I wish they were served with gravy The coleslaw was perfect, not too wet. Overall a nice place to get fish and chips as well as some other items. There is something for everyone. ”
“ Great fresh hot food here! The service is great too! After I told the waitress something a little personal about my diet she immediately made wonderful suggestions about what to try and I did and it was fresh hot and faster than I expected it to be ”
“ Great place for fish and chips. We had the pacific cod, jalepeno poppers, and strawberry lemonade. Five medium sized fish in a bowl full of fries. Menu has many great options to choose from and staff were very warm and welcoming. The gummy worm "bait" with the check was a fun touch! ”
